The endocrine system is composed of glands that secrete chemical messengers known as hormones. Hormones are carried in the bloodstream to specific areas of the body, including the organs and body tissues. The pineal gland, the hypothalamus, the pituitary gland, the thyroid, the ovaries, and the testes are some of the most important glands in the body. Each of these glands works in a number of unique ways in specific areas.

Located at the base of the forebrain, the hypothalamus regulates basic needs such as sleep, hunger, thirst, and sex drive. It’s also involved in producing our emotional and stress responses. The hypothalamus controls the pituitary glands, which, in turn, controls the release of hormones from other glands that are part of the endocrine system.

Therefore an ABI in the area of the hypothalamus can lead to problems relating to the endocrine system.

We are delighted that for this Master Class we have one of the UK’s leading specialist in this area, Dr Helen Spoudeas, who is Consultant Paediatric Endocrinologist at Great Ormond Street Hospital, and also founder of  Success Charity. Helen will be exploring the links and issues around the impact that an ABI can have on the endocrine system and how this may manifest in children and young people.

This Master Class will be delivered virtually via the Zoom platform on the morning of Wednesday 11th May 2022, between 09:30 and 12:30.

This event will carry 2.5 hours Certified CPD.

Our Master Class Lectures are aimed at delegates who already have an understanding of childhood acquired brain injury.  For those who are new to this topic we would recommend joining our “Understanding Childhood Acquired Brain Injury” Workshop (available for professionals only) prior to booking a Master Class Lecture, or viewing our E-Learning Sessions. Details for these can be found on our website –

This Masterclass will help us to understand a little known or discussed area of ABI and is the first time that we have covered this topic in any way, so will be a thought provoking and interesting session.

Content:

* What is the endocrine system and what does it do?
* Each of the different glands/hormones and their function
* Why can ABI (of any type – accident, illness, stroke, NAI, poisoning and tumour) cause disruption to the endocrine system?
* What are the likely impacts of damage to each of the glands following ABI?
* What are the treatments/strategies to support young people after ABI, if they have related endocrine issues

We are pleased to be able to offer a limited number of places to families we are supporting, without charge, so they can access the knowledge and information that will help them and their son or daughter.
