“On a Good Day”

Child Brain Injury Trust Joins Headway’s Action for Brain Injury Week to Shine a Light on the Reality of Acquired Brain Injury

Every 90 seconds, someone in the UK is admitted to hospital with an acquired brain injury (ABI), and every 15 minutes, a child in the UK acquires a brain injury. Many of these individuals face lifelong, invisible challenges, yet their struggles often go unnoticed.

This year, during Action for Brain Injury Week (19–25 May 2025), the Child Brain Injury Trust (CBIT) is proud to once again join forces with Headway to highlight the unpredictable nature of ABI through the “On a Good Day” campaign.

The campaign aims to foster understanding by showcasing the contrast between good and bad days for ABI survivors. It will feature real stories and insights from families, and practical advice on accessibility, while also celebrating the small victories that make a difference.

“A good day for a child with ABI might mean being able to go to school, play with friends, or visit a theme park with the right support. But the next day, that same child might struggle with fatigue, sensory overload, or memory issues. By sharing these experiences, we hope to build empathy and encourage better support systems in society,” said Amelia Larard, Head of Marketing and Fundraising at the Child Brain Injury Trust.

Throughout the week, CBIT will be sharing impactful videos and personal testimonies from families affected by acquired brain injuries. The campaign will also highlight accessibility schemes and resources available to help children with ABI enjoy more good days.

Harry’s Story – The Faces Behind the Facts

One of the children featured in the campaign is Harry, who acquired a brain injury at age 14 due to an illness that caused abscesses on his brain. After undergoing multiple surgeries, Harry had to relearn how to walk, eat, and dress himself. His injury left lasting damage—he now experiences focal epilepsy and will always function at the developmental level of a 6- to 7-year-old.

In 2022, a severe seizure led to a fall that dislodged his cranioplasty plate. He underwent emergency surgery for an extradural haematoma, followed by a major infection and 10 weeks of IV antibiotics. Recovery demanded intensive therapy, but Harry continues to defy expectations.

Now 21, Harry is thriving in a specialist college where he has access to the support and therapies he needs.

“On a good day, Harry is alert, funny, and full of life,” say his parents, Emma and Pete. “He loves steam trains, going out for coffee, and doing jigsaw puzzles. On a bad day, his energy crashes. He struggles to speak, may experience seizures, and needs complete rest. Plans often change with little warning, and that can be hard for others to understand. He’s a tall, grown man—but inside, he’s still a little boy who needs childlike care. We just wish people could see beyond the surface.”
