Meet the Team
Cari is a Partner and Joint Head of the National Serious Injury Team which won “Claimant Catastrophic Injury Team of the Year” at the PI Awards 2021.
Cari specialises in representing adult and child claimants who have sustained life changing injuries such as traumatic brain injuries, spinal injuries, limb loss and polytrauma following road traffic collisions, injuries at work and assaults. Cari is passionate about ensuring that her clients access specialist rehabilitation and support as early as possible in order to achieve the best recovery and liaises with her clients (and families where appropriate), case managers, treating clinicians, expert witnesses and support teams to ensure that the best possible outcome (both in terms of compensation and rehabilitation) is reached for her clients.
Bringing claims against insurance companies, the Motor Insurers’ Bureau, the Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority and local authorities, Cari has recovered many millions of pounds in compensation for her clients.
For each client she works with, Cari sets up a bespoke team of highly qualified professionals, for example, leading counsel and specialist juniors, excellent medico-legal experts and skilled therapists in order to provide the best support to her clients.
Given the nature of her clients’ injuries, Cari liaises closely with the Court of Protection team for those clients who lack the capacity to manage their financial affairs and property.
Cari enjoys working collaboratively with individuals and organisations (such as NHS clinicians, police and emergency services, rehab providers, charities, defendant solicitors and insurers) who share her belief that we should all work together in the best interests of injured people.
Cari is the Chair of Trustees for Headway Cardiff and South East Wales and works closely with many charities who support individuals who have suffered life changing injuries.

Working alongside fellow partners in the Individual Services Division, Deborah’s role involves developing and leading on regional and national business development strategies, building strong and valuable relationships with professionals and charities working with seriously injured and bereaved people, and understanding and showcasing the expertise of the different individual lawyers and specialist teams at the firm.
Deborah’s background as a serious injury lawyer and representing clients over many years puts her in a unique position to create opportunities and work together with others to build networks for effective signposting and ensure clients receive the holistic support they need.
Her role involves managing the firm’s relationships with lots of different charity partners whose work aligns to that done by the Hugh James teams, as well as the staff-nominated charities of the year.
Deborah was one of the first solicitors to input into the training of police family liaison officers, something she has done since 2002, educating them on legal options available to families through the civil courts. Since 2008, she has been a trustee of Brake The Road Safety Charity, becoming Chair in 2010. The charity’s work is close to her heart following the death of her grandad in a road crash in 1990.
Deborah is Vice Chair of FLACSS (Family Liaison Affiliated Collective of Support Services), a group of charities working with family liaison officers to support those affected by murder, manslaughter and road death.
A client commented: “I would like to recommend Deborah for her pro-active nature, her efficiency and her professionalism. In my dealings with her, she has been nothing but friendly and warm.”
